Coleman Smith is an award-winning, cross-genre violinist. Coleman, who began playing the violin at the age of three, blends an understanding of classical, jazz, folk, country, and bluegrass elements into his performances. Coleman was awarded a full Presidential scholarship to the music department at Marywood University where he studied music performance and minored in music pedagogy graduating Cum Laude. Coleman’s degrees in both performance and pedagogy have allowed him to build a reputation as a leading educator alongside his stellar reputation as an elite performer.


In his youth Coleman traveled across the nation studying various styles of fiddle music as well as competing in some of the most prestigious fiddle contests, eventually becoming one of the nations top competitors and winning the World Series of Twin Fiddling. After studying with a variety of iconic teachers and mentors such as The Texas Playboys including Eldon Shamblin, Bobby Cofer, Leon Rouch, and such fiddle legends Johnny Gimble, Bob Boatwright, Frankie McWhorther, Dale Morris and Randy Elmore, Asleep at the Wheel, Curtis Potter, and Tony Booth, he decided to make his passion his life’s work.


As a founding member of the band Rapidgrass Coleman previously served as the group’s fiddle player for over a decade. Coleman is currently the fiddle player for Yonder Mountain String Band and also performs with David Lawrence & the Spoonful and The Bluegrass Journeymen. Over the course of his 30 year career, Coleman has had the honor of sharing the stage with a plethora of renowned musicians ranging from Leftover Salmon and Railroad Earth, to Dierks Bentley, Roy Williams & The Human Hands, Billy Cardine, Jeff Austin Band, Pheobe Hunt & The Gatherers, Grant Farm, Jason Carter, Billy Strings, and many other incredible artists.


In 2018, Coleman relocated from Decatur, Texas , where he served as a music educator for over 15 years, to Buena Vista, Colorado to establish his company, Coletrain Music Academy (CMA). In 2023, Coleman expanded into a second location in Salida, Colorado.


In addition to teaching Coleman has over a decade of experience running music workshops in both the US, including his annual Camp Coletrain event as well as Internationally in India with The Bluegrass Journeymen and in Europe for Bluegrass in La Roche Festival.
